The Song

Horatio G. Spafford was known as a sincere and devout Christian. He was a father of a son and four daughters. In 1871 his only son became sick and died. Months later, the Great Chicago Fire burned most of his possessions and buildings that he owned. A couple of years later, on a trip to vacation in Europe, the ship where his four daughters and wife were traveling on was in an accident. His four daughters along with more than 200 people lost their lives that day. Spafford's wife was one of the few people who survived. This song was written in 1873 following this very difficult time. The author expresses the unexplainable peace that God gave him in the midst of this terrible loss. In a moment of deep despair and derailed hope the song "It is well with my soul" rises from the depths of lament to find grace and comfort.  For more information please see :

The Prayer

This song can be accompanied by guitar and/or piano. The chorus can be sung as a response to the Pastoral Prayer (Prayers of Intercession). It is a hymn that expresses faith in God and peace in the midst of loss and so would be fitting for  funeral or memorial services.
